Red Fern Press is an independent book publishing press based in Ohio. We’re looking for both fiction and nonfiction work from debut authors to help launch their careers. We will also consider authors who are looking for a fresh start at a new publisher.
In fiction, we want submissions in the areas of sports, true crime, psychological thrillers and mysteries, fantasy or magical realism in the vein of Harry Potter or Jane the Virgin, romance, and comedy. In nonfiction, we want submissions in the areas of sports, true crime, memoir, parenting, romance, relationships, inspirational, or comedy. We also love short story, creative nonfiction collections similar to Robert Fulgham, Chelsea Handler, Bell Hooks, and the like.
The length of your work for a debut novel should be between 50,000 and 80,000 words. Books with fantasy elements can trend upwards of 100,000 to 120,000 words. Debut nonfiction should be between 40,000 and 70,000 words. We will consider shorter lengths, including short novels and novellas, but they must be extremely well-written.
DO NOT submit anything to Red Fern Press (or any publisher for that matter!) that has not been proofread or properly formatted. Your manuscript should be clean as a whistle, with proper margins, 12-point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced. Nonfiction books should have a book proposal prepared to send. Fiction books should be fully written and edited before submitting.
All Red Fern Press books MUST feature strong female characters or female characters with a character arc that takes them from stereotypical roles to empowered ones. Books submitted where female characters are one-note and shallow will not be read.
